Doc Soup: Big River Man

by Lisa Murphy-Lamb · 1 comment

I’m on a bit of a swimming streak lately so it seems. Three times a week I take my son to his swim meet work outs, then earlier this week I checked out Chrisophe Jivraj’s The Swimmers video art installation at The New Gallery. Next in line is a swim-theme documentary, Big River Man. This film is the kick-off documentary for the screening series, Doc Soup, a monthly film series showcasing the latest Canadian and international documentaries. I had never heard of Doc Soup until last week when I bid and won a subscription for the 2009-2010 year at a silent auction.

First, a bit about the movie. This film follows Slovenian long distance swimmer Martin Strel for 66-days as he swims down the Amazon River. This isn’t his first swim but it promises to be risky as he battles the dangers of the river and his own demons (like the fact he drinks two bottles of wine a day).

Second, some information on how to take in this compelling film. Big River Man will run at November 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cineplex Odeon Eau Claire Market, 200 Barclay Parade, S.W. Rumour has it the director, John Maringouin, will (may?) be in attendance for a question and answer period, after the film.

Tickets are $12 in advance or $14 at the door. Or if the thought of experiencing captivating, real-life stories from around the world followed by lively discussions with guest directors intrigues you like it does me, docsoup subscriptions can be purchased
