Fairy Tales’ Shorts for all Sorts Preview

November 6th, 2009 by Wil Knoll

Seriously, I’ll be selling drink tickets.

Next Tuesday the Fairy Tales Diversity Film Festival is going against the cooling trend in weather and busting out the shorts for one last go round. The Shorts for All Sorts: Queer Film Quickies screening will be at The Uptown, starting at 7:30 pm.

The Fairy Tales Film Festival has been running for a bit over six years now, and is still the only annual gay and lesbian film festival in Alberta. This year they have decided to split the year in half and put a short film festival at the halfway lead in to the event in May.

Festival organizer Jessica Dollard felt that there were just too many solid short films that sadly do not make the cut for the full length festival, and never make it to a full theatrical release. Some of the selected short films will make the circuit on other festivals, but would probably not be shown at any other time in Calgary. So Shorts for All Sorts will give these gems their chance here.  The organizers have tried to build an accessible program that is more mainstream and inclusive then fringe, welcoming everyone to come and watch.

With a very open submission process, Jessica and the selection committee have been getting together once a week since September to screen submissions for the full length festival, but in the past month they have tilted their aim a bit to focus on the shorts for the Tuesday event. “It’s a lot of fun, really the best part of the job. There is something about the people, opinions, and critical discourse that surrounds the films. It’s way better than making a spreadsheet any day.”

“Tell me about it”, I said. Then I confirmed that I would be volunteering at the after party.

Shorts for all Sorts is not limited to a screening of a handful of short films (seven is a handful right?), but will spill into The Marquee Room for a dance party afterward. There are four local DJs spinning at what organizers bill as “the gayest LGBTQ Dance this fall” (I had to look that up: Lesbian Gay Bi Trans-gender Queer).

Drinks are $5 until 11PM, and that’s where I come in. Hunt me down at the event.  I’ll be selling tickets with another Het, a female, and we may decided to swap clothes for the night (she’s way more slender than me and my shoulders will probably not fit in her shirt).

Whether you are LGBTQ or just another boring Het like me that loves everyone the same, you should definitely check out these shorts. They’re kinda revealing.
