Celebrating Chinatown’s Centenary

by Leah Wong · 0 comments

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Calgary’s Chinatown, with two big events happening on August 14.  The 10th annual Chinatown Street Festival runs from 10am-8pm, while the Cultural Centre’s Chinatown 100 Firework Grand Celebration starts at 6:30pm.

Chinatown Street Festival

The Chinatown Street Festival is the main summer festival in Calgary’s Chinatown.  There will be a large number of local vendor booths and entertainment in the heart of Chinatown – 2nd Avenue SE, 3rd Avenue SE & 1st Street SE will be closed off to traffic for the event.  In previous years, attendance rates have been around 50,000 people.

On the main stage, Lion Dances kick off performances at 11:15am, followed by Chinese opera singers, singing, folk dancing, and magic shows.  The main stage will be located off 3rd Ave. and 1st St. SE, along with a large seating area for you to take in the performances.  Near the main stage is “Taste of Asia,” the main food area for the festival.

The festival is extremely family-friendly, with an entire Kids’ Play Zone, which includes a jungle bouncer. The family activities start at 11am and wrap up at 6pm.  There will also be a climbing wall set up near the Hong Kong Style Flea Market on 2nd Avenue.  Near this market a second stage will have a Hong Kong Style Flea Market Variety Show.

Since streets are closed starting at 1am the morning of the festival, be aware it will probably take a longer than usual to park if you plan on driving to the event.  Chinatown is a short walk from the C-train station line, so consider taking transit to avoid traffic.

Chinatown 100 Firework Grand Celebration

On the same day as the street festival, the Chinese Cultural Centre is hosting the Chinatown 100 Firework Grand Celebration to celebrate the Centenary.  This 2000 person event will occur on the Centre Street Bridge starting at 6:30pm.  The event starts with a Stampede style barbecue and country music performances.  Starting at 8:30pm there will be lion and dragon dances, performances by a Chinese musical ensemble and performances on a mini stage.  At 10pm the grand finale of the event will be a fireworks display.

Tickets for the event are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 or under and can be purchased at the Chinese Cultural Centre.
