Classical Calgary – Mozart in the City celebrates music, dining, art and entertainment with 18th century style in Calgary until November 13, 2010.  The variety of events allows you to mix and match the perfect night with Mozart in the City for you.

My night started at CHARCUT Roast House, stopped at a Mozart Masquerade and Murder Mystery, strolled down Stephen Avenue Walk and finished at Hotel Le Germain.

CHARCUT was everything I’d hoped for from the first peek at their menu (Austrian beer pairings!) to the final sip of blueberry tea.  My meal made me realize warm potato salad is my new favourite, sausage should always be served in a skillet and fire-grilled trout is not just for camping trips.  But the standout?  Beer pairings.  Beer Steward, Kirk Bodnar, matched each course perfectly.  Who knew beer worked with something other than hot wings?  If you like beer and want to try something different with it, I highly recommend trying a few selections from CHARCUT’s beer cellar.

Next, who killed Mozart?  Teatro was host to the after-party for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s performance of Mozart and Salieri, a Masquerade and Murder Mystery.  After having been to a few clubs for past Halloweens, the idea of a masquerade sounded like fun.  The drinks at Teatro were well worth it and a nice change from the mini-jugs of past Halloweens. If you’ve never been to a murder mystery I highly recommend it, but a word of advice?  Always suspect the bumbling buffoon or the best friend.

Finally, a quick stroll along Stephen Avenue Walk for a bit of late-night people watching then back to the hotel. Was it worth it to spend a night in a hotel in my own city? Definitely yes. The location was fantastic and the rooms were even better than they looked online (rain showers are as awesome as they sound).

Mozart in the City is a great way to celebrate some of the best parts of Calgary. For more details go to visitcalgary.com and enjoy the last  weekend of the festival, maybe even the after-party at Centini’s, although you’ll have to leave your mask at home.
