Arthur Eats at The Below Deck Tavern

Below Deck Tavern

Looking for somewhere in the heart of Stephen Ave where you can watch the Euro Cup and find a table? Sound too good to be true? Think again.

As the name suggests, the Below Deck Tavern is located below street level, at 221 8 Ave SW, and it has all of the comforts of an Atlantic pub. Female servers in kilts and a decent number of HDTVs lining the walls, make this the perfect spot to grab a pint with the boys and watch the game.

While they have favourites like chicken wings, nachos, burgers, and of course fish and chips, you’ll find the menu has more to offer. Appys include steamed clams, mussels and deep fried pepperoni. I’ll definitely be trying that next time I go!

Below Deck tavern donair

I went to lunch with fellow blogger Jaron who had the massive Halifax Donair. This thing was a two-hander for sure! Jaron said it was great, he liked the deliciously sweet sauce that was drizzled over and throughout the pita!

Below Deck Tavern Scallops And Chips

Ever tried scallops or shrimp and chips? Neither had I until Tuesday. Our server assured me the two dishes were equally good, so I went with the slightly healthier pan fried scallops as opposed to the deep fried shrimps. Wow! The scallops were perfectly cooked, tasted awesome and were served with tartar sauce, lemon wedge, carrots, celery and hand-cut fries. White and malt vinegar to douse the fish and fries completed the meal!

(editor’s note: as you may be able to tell from the photos of the food, the Below Deck Tavern is a little dark, so be careful when you emerge from lunch on to the bright and sunny Stephen Avenue Walk. You may need some time to let your eyes adjust.)
