BBQ lovers rejoice! The 20th Annual BBQ on the Bow Festival is coming up on Sunday, September 2 from 10:00am-5:30pm at Eau Claire Festival Market, where meat lovers from near and far will congregate to enjoy all things BBQ.
This fun, FREE event, celebrating its 20th year, is the oldest BBQ Competition of its kind in Canada. Last year’s competitors included teams from all over AB, BC and SK but also drew a US contingent with a reach as far as Houston, Texas.
In the BBQ on the Bow “Alberta Championship,” teams vie for recognition as the Grand Champion by earning the most points in the following categories: Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork Butt and Beef Brisket and all cooking must be done on charcoal, wood or wood pellet barbecues. There are also BBQ Sauce and Chef’s Challenge competitions, which don’t count for points - just bragging rights.
Still can’t decide what will be more entertaining - the BBQ itself or the funny names of some of the teams. Last year saw competitors such as, Grillers in the Mist, Porkaholics Anonymous, Smokeback Mountain, Indiana Bones & His Temple of mmmm, Rub Me Tender Crew and the Montucky Grillbillies. Love the creativity!
There will be something for the whole family to enjoy at this one. Lip-smacking BBQ from the Holy Smoke BBQ Pit Tent, Big T’s Smokehouse Trailer and Alberta Beef’s Tasting Trailer, children’s craft tent, Quest Theatre children’s storytelling tent, live music, plus a Street Zone with vendor booths, art displays, BBQ sauces and spices for sale.
Pop by the BBQ on the Bow Kitchen from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm to learn the secrets of celebrity chefs as they demonstrate and grill up their favorite recipes using Alberta produce, turkey, pork, beef, chicken, bison, and lamb. Check here for a detailed schedule.
The 20th Anniversary will see more teams competing (35 compared to 25 last year), and some big musical names on the main stage, including Darren Johnson, Jack Semple Band, Donald Ray Jones with Mike Clark.
It will be exciting to see if local team, Lords of the Grill, will be able to defend their title as 2011 Grand Champion. Good luck boys!
