A Downtown Calgary Year in Review 2012

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

A lot has happened in 2012, the world is a big place and new things are happening even as I type this. For those keeping score at home, the Downtown Calgary Association has been very busy making the most of every day and to prove it, we’ve put together a little round up of our favourite events of 2012.

High Performance Rodeo

One Yellow Rabbit put on a High Performance Rodeo for the ages! With Mexican Wrestlers, artist in residence Laurie Anderson and the very popular outdoor dance party called Snowblower featuring pioneering DJ Kid Koala. Sadly, we won’t be getting a Snowblower this year but there is a lot of great stuff lined up for 2013.

Big Taste

The 10 day dining event took place in March and we’re still stuffed! The Downtown Calgary Association hosted a number of sold-out culinary events featuring food celebrity John Gilchrist. Additionally, foodies of all walks got to enjoy fixed price menus at over 75 local restaurants. Start fasting now, planning for Big Taste 2013 has begun and it’s going to be a good one.

Alley Oop

It’s not every day you get to see an opera in an alley. Yes, we were all a little confused when Mercury Opera pitched the idea but it was a remarkable success! Keep an eye out for more unexpected fun in unexpected places in downtown Calgary.

Canada Day

This year’s Canada Day featured an amazing fireworks show launched off of the Centre Street bridge. Calgarians celebrating the birth of our country were also treated to an amazing line-up of musicians on Prince’s Island Park, “Calgary Eats” event in Olympic Plaza, vendors on Stephen Avenue and so much more! 2013 will be even bigger and better, so keep an eye on our blog to be the first to know what’s up.

Stampede 100

If the Calgary Stampede wasn’t already one of the biggest events of the year in our fair city, the 100th anniversary sure pushed it over the top. Starting with a 100 day countdown in Olympic Plaza the fun had momentum that carried on through the summer. Our First Flip pancake breakfast was one of the biggest yet and we hope 2013 we be just as much fun!

Folkfest

With amazing headliners like Randy Newman, Chris Isaak, Dan Mangan, Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Magnum, it’s no surprise that the festival broke ticket sale records. The festival also added an ‘Apache Talk Tent’ which featured legendary comedian Kevin McDonald as well as a number of other local and national comedians to give a new spin on Folkfest.

London Olympics

While the games were going on across the pond, the Downtown Calgary association was happy to provide a place where office workers and other urbanites could watch the games live on television. Employees of all sorts, tourists, and even local families made their way to Stephen Avenue to enjoy Canada competing in one of the most exciting Olympics ever!

Back to Style

September was an interesting month full of fun and fashion. We had out Style Van parked on Stephen Avenue, and it featured a number of downtown businesses showing off their stylish side. We also had the pleasure of meeting our four lovely Style Icons who were ambassadors of everything that is stylish in downtown Calgary.

Walk of Fame Launch

Stephen Avenue got a bad makeover by Bad Portrait artist Mandy Stobo. She painted a number of tree-grates to honor famous Calgarians, as well as help curb cigarette litter. A number of local celebrities were on hand to sign their works of art.

Naughty or Nice Scavenger Hunt

Ok, this just happened so I don’t need to dig in to all the details, but we had a ton of fun in the Devonian Gardens for the wrap up of our scavenger hunt. Participants took to the streets to track down 12 clues from around downtown for a chance to win a $2400 prize package which included gift certificates for Bankers hall, The CORE and a 5 course dinner (with wine pairings) for friends and family at downtownfood. It was quite the event and the Devonian Gardens have never looked so festive!
