Beer + Food = Good Times

“Mmmm, beer.”  Pretty sure Homer Simpson said it best.

I’m no connoisseur, but I know what I like and when the opportunity came up to attend a special Brewmasters Dinner featuring Village Brewery’s craft beer I was pretty pumped.

The event, which took place at The Libertine Public House, was one of several unique culinary offerings during  The Big Taste, Calgary’s Annual Dining Festival.

First up was a Fresh Oyster on the Half Shell with a Wit Beer Granita paired with the Village Blacksmith.  Brewmaster Larry Kerwin and Chef Robert Fedosoff were both on hand to talk about the beer used and the preparation of the dishes, which was a nice touch despite a few hiccups with the sound system.

Welsh rarebit

The second course was Welsh Rarebit made with Village spelt grain bread paired with the Village Dirty Blonde.  The Dirty Blonde is a mixture of the Village Blonde and the Village Blacksmith. Sounds scandalous, tastes delicious.

Mac and cheese

Third was a Dirty Blonde Mac & Cheese with an Ale Braised Pork Drumette. Loved the little pork drummie!  Like a chicken wing, but not. Brilliant.

Float

The meal ended with a Village Wit Beer Float with Blood Orange Sorbet from Fiasco Gelato and a couple of tasty ginger snaps, which were made using Chef Fedosoff’s mom’s secret recipe.  Thanks Mom! I was a little skeptical about putting sorbet in beer, but it was actually pretty good.

All of the special culinary events for The Big Taste have sold out, but there are over 70 restaurants offering special set menus until March 10th.  Menus can be viewed here.  Enjoy!
