Looking for some fun activities to keep the family occupied this Family Day long weekend? Here are a few excellent options.

WowFest Magic Arts Festival

The WowFest Magic Arts Festival returns for a second run from February 17 to March 1 at the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts.

It will be an exciting two weeks of magical entertainment for all ages, including the Family Fun Magic Show on Monday, February 17th.  Tickets are $15 per person, or families of four (or more) can purchase the Family Ticket Pack to save $3 per ticket. Their schedule and ticket info can be found here.

Honens Storytellers: Mother Goose Tales

Join Honens on Sunday, February 16th at the Theatre Junction GRAND for a very uinque afternoon of music and classic fairy tales.  The talented Judd Palmer, co-founder of Calgary’s Old Trout Puppet Workshop and a Governor General’s Award nominated author of children’s books, re-imagines five Mother Goose classics, including Beauty and the Beast and Tom Thumb. His new text, illustrations and narration are set to the music of Maurice Ravel, performed on piano by Honens Prize Laureate Minsoo Sohn. Recommended for ages five and up. More details can be found here.

A Trip to the Central Library

Explore and take home some new books to read together, or take part in one of their scheduled events. Love You Forever will be held on Saturday, February 15 from 11:15 – 11:45 am to celebrate Valentine’s Day with stories, songs and rhymes about families for adults & kids ages 2 to 5 with a parent or caregiver. This particular event is currently full, but you can add your name to a waiting list in case a spot frees up here.

ARC Discovery Room at the Glenbow

The ARC Discovery Room at the Glenbow Museum is a place where visitors of all ages can enjoy art activities and explore the ideas featured in their exhibitions. It is open to the public daily during museum hours, but may be closed for private groups and school bookings, so please call ahead to inquire about possible closures.

The following activities are available at the Glenbow until May 4, 2014:

Compact Disc Art – Use acrylic paint markers to create Mandala designs on the CDs. The paint can then be scratched away in various patterns, revealing the reflective surface for a very pleasing affect. Mini Leather Jackets – Make your own little masterpiece by decorating miniature “pleather” jackets. Explorations in Art – Pick up an activity sheet in the Discovery Room and, once you’ve completed it, turn it in to compete for a prize.

Family Picnic at Devonian Gardens

Grab some tasty treats from Sunterra in Bankers Hall, or one of the many food courts nearby (Lancaster Building, The CORE 4th floor, or Bankers Hall 3rd floor) and head down to Devonian Gardens for an indoor picnic.  There’s a great playground for the kids to work up there appetite.

Winter Activities at Prince’s Island Park

Bring your family down to Prince’s Island Park to enjoy some family friendly activities, including biofacts roving, story time, games, and skating challenges. They run Thursdays and Fridays from 5:00-8:00pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from noon-5:00pm from now until February 28.  More details can be found here.

Downtown Public Art Tours

A great way to get in some exercise while the weather is merciful, and instill an appreciation of art in your children.  The City of Calgary has a fantastic self-guided Downtown Public Art Circuit Tour.  You can find a wealth of information here, including a +15 Art Circuit map, a podcast and an app to assist you. We also have a Downtown Art Guide available on our site here.

Outdoor Skating

With the weather having recently warmed up, it would be fun to head out for a family skate! There are two beautiful outdoor rinks in the downtown core at Olympic Plaza and Prince’s Island Lagoon.
