GLOW Downtown Winter Light Festival

by Downtown Calgary · 2 comments

From February 17th - 20th, the night comes alive in Calgary with GLOW: a family-friendly interactive light festival in the heart of downtown. This free, all-ages event welcomes everyone to warm up winter’s darkest days and kick off Canada’s 150th birthday celebration year. The festival runs from 6:30pm - 11pm every night.

The festival will host 12 different light art installations that will be set up around the downtown core. These installations are designed by local, national, and international artists.

Below are images from several of the installations that you will be able to find while attending GLOW!

Prismatica, by Raw Design

Smile, by Varvara & Mar

Nibbles, by Amanda Parer

The Breath of Life, by Eveline Kolijn & Brian Queen

TropiCalgary by OtherDreamLogics

More information about all of the installations and artists can be found on the official GLOW website. Keep following our blog to read some upcoming guest blogs from a few of the artists!

GLOW Downtown Winter Light Festival will also feature additional activities for everyone to enjoy over the weekend, including:

AfterGlow Lounge - February 17th & 18th, 6pm - 10pm
Contemporary Calgary - 117 8th Avenue SW

Drop in to meet the artists behind GLOW and learn more about them and their installations!

GLOW Workshop: Interactive Lights - February 18th, 2pm - 5pm
The Westin Calgary - 320 4th Avenue SW

Presented by Varvara & Mar

You can do much more with light than just switching it on and off! What if you could control the colour of every LED, create animations, patterns, signs, etc? Moreover, light can also be interactive and responsive to various actions, like proximity, temperature, touch and much more.

In the workshop, Varvara & Mar introduce how to control colour of RGB LED strip with open source microcontroller Arduino and a library FastLED. Bring a laptop where you can install Arduino software. All other components will be provided.

Registration required, more information to come.

GLOW Youth Workshop: Throwies - February 19th, 3pm - 5pm
The Westin Calgary - 320 4th Avenue SW

Presented by Varvara & Mar

LED Throwies were developed by the Graffiti Research Lab. The throwies are an inexpensive and creative way to add colour and play to any ferromagnetic surface in your neighbourhood. A Throwie consists of a lithium battery, a LED and a magnet taped together.

During the workshop the participants will make their own throwies that they can later use for adding light and colour to their own homes and city streets. The event will take place in- and out-doors.

Registration required, check back for more information.

GLOW Family Skate Party - February 19th, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Olympic Plaza - 228 8th Avenue SE

Fun for all, wear your neon, brightest, flashing, blinking, glowing best! Skate rentals will be available. More information to come.

Other events occurring downtown during the Family Day long weekend can be found on our website.

Go GLOW Program

During the festival, participants will have the opportunity to purchase a GLOW festival bracelet that can be used to unlock promotions at participating businesses. These bracelets will be available for purchase at two of our hubs (Harley Hotchkiss and Olympic Plaza), for a minimum donation of $2 which will go towards a local charity.

Participating businesses are still to be determined. If you are a downtown business with operating hours during the GLOW festival and would like to be involved, please email Lindsay at [email protected]
