Mango Shiva

I am planning a weekend in San Francisco with a friend. Her job is to research where to eat and drink. I find the fun literary/art/outdoorsy events. We met up over lunch to share our research. Lunch was at Mango Shiva a contemporary Indian restaurant on Stephen Avenue mall. In fact, Mango Shiva has moved in and taken over where Dairy Queen used to be (so that’s what’s happened to Dairy Queen, now I know).

Sleek and hip, this restaurant was crowded even though we were there before noon. If you want to eat lunch make a reservation. We had to eat at the bar, which was fine for us. I guess with the move, Mango Shiva had hoped to move away from the lunch buffet and move strictly to an a la cart menu. Lunch patrons complained and the buffet is back. At $20.95 a person, the selection is good for both vegetarians and non vegetarians with dishes ranging from an assortment of cold salads to spinach aloo, mushroom paneer to lamb kofta, tandoori salmon and of course, butter chicken. My girlfriend suggested the wine a Schloss Gobeslberg Gobelsburger Gruner Veltiner listed on the menu for $9 a glass but listed on the bill for $10 a glass (I didn’t realize the discrepency from my notes and bill until I got home) and in her opinion was too cold initially (she is the one in charge of where we eat and drink in San Francisco for a reason, she’s a Foodie, yes, with a capital F) but I happily drank it. Naan is served to you at the table and chapati is part of the buffet. The menu replaces the buffet for dinner so for the evening meals traditional indian food is replaced with a more contemporary approach which would suit the modern decor of Mango Shiva. I’ll go back on a Friday night and check it out. Buffets are fine, and this one is, but I appreciate the new direction this restaurant is trying to take and I’m happy to go along for the ride-as long as they don’t overcharge me again for my second glass of wine.
