Word on the Street: What’s New on Stephen Avenue Walk?

by Downtown Calgary · 3 comments

If you’ve been downtown recently you may have noticed a few changes on one of the main pedestrian corridors, Stephen Avenue Walk (8th Avenue SW between 1 St SE & 3rd St SW).

New Life Awaits the Long-Vacant Bank of Montreal Building
The gorgeous old Bank of Montreal Building at 136 8 Ave SW (right on the corner of 1 St SW) has recently undergone some renovations and is now looking for retailers to lease space.  This spot, once home to an A & B Sound is located at one of the busiest corners in the entire City.

Downtown Deals
A Dollarama is opening soon at 232 8 Ave SW (near Scotia Centre) where Juan’s Mexican Restaurante used to be.  For those not familiar with the chain, it is the leading dollar store operator in Canada with 690 locations across the country. Products are sold at select fixed price points up to $2.00.

Foodies Rejoice
Just upstairs from the new Dollarama, SAIT Polytechnic is developing a downtown culinary campus!  Work has begun on a satellite campus at 230 8 Ave SW that is scheduled to open in fall of 2012.  The new campus will provide more students the opportunity to participate in the Baking and Pastry Arts and Professional Cooking programs that SAIT offers.

This is an exciting prospect for both students and downtown workers alike, as students will be able to sell their products in a small market that is attached to the kitchens.  Sounds like an exciting new spot to go for lunch!   More details can be found here:  SAIT Developing Downtown Campus

We are also excited to announce that we have a new Downtown Pedestrian Mall Manager, Shauna Quinn, who joined our team in December 2011 replacing long-time DPM Manager, Janet Jessiman.  Shauna has an extensive background in Event Planning, including the Olympics, so keep your eye out for some new ideas and events hitting the downtown core this spring.
