Get Vexed with Honens on Stephen Avenue

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

What’s the longest song you’ve ever heard?

Is it the 8+ minute story-song American Pie? Or maybe a progressive rock song by the likes of Pink Floyd, Rush or YES that clock in over 12+ minutes? Maybe you’re a classical music buff and you’re used to 30+ minute works. While quite long by normal standards, those are barely a blink of an compared to what Honens has in store for Vexations!

To celebrate famed avant garde French composer Erik Satie’s 150th birthday, Honens will be recruiting a relay team of pianist to play Satie’s Vexations, which is known as the longest piano piece in history.

Starting September 8th at 4:30am outside Contemporary Calgary, 30 volunteer pianists will play in shifts for 18 hours.

Does this sound crazy? Perhaps it is, as Erik Satie wrote music that defied tradition, and is now remembered more than 90 years after his death.

Like Satie before them, Honens is known for pushing boundaries and bringing piano music to the streets with events like Piano Power (in the CORE shopping centre) and Concrete Sonata, which featured classical piano music on the streets of Downtown Calgary for free lunch hour concerts.

Can’t get enough piano? Be sure to check out the 2016 Honens Festival, which kicks off with Vexations and continues from Sept 8th to 11th with a number of performances around Calgary.
