All the Christmas Feels Downtown: Screen and Stage

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

For some, the spirit of Christmas starts with a good story! Catch an ol’ traditional tale or start that season with a new narrative. Below are a couple classics and newer tales to check out.

A Christmas Story - Theatre Junction GRAND
December 1, 2021

Theatre Junction GRAND continues with their Movies at The Grand series by bringing you an ultimate holiday favourite - A Christmas Story!

This beloved holiday movie follows the wintry exploits of youngster Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), who spends most of his time dodging a bully (Zack Ward) and dreaming of his ideal Christmas gift, a “Red Ryder air rifle.” Frequently at odds with his cranky dad (Darren McGavin) but comforted by his doting mother (Melinda Dillon), Ralphie struggles to make it to Christmas Day with his glasses and his hopes intact.

A Christmas Carol - Theatre Calgary
November 23 - December 24, 2021

Theatre Calgary’s annual production of Dickens’ classic tale has become a favourite holiday tradition. Let Tiny Tim, and the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future melt your heart with kindness and rejoice in the music of the season.

The Santaland Diaries - Lunchbox Theatre
November 27 - December 23, 2021

This is one elf that won’t make the NICE list! His name is Crumpet and he’ll tell you the truth about Santaland. An out of work and broke actor in New York city takes a job as an elf in Macy’s Santaland Village. The behind-the-scenes reality of holiday cheer is not the blissful peppermint dream that he had imagined. Fortunately, he’s willing to share his hilarious horror story publicly. Based on David Sedaris’ hilarious book chronicling his outlandish experience working as an elf in a Macy’s Santaland, The Santaland Diaries is a one-man riff on one elf’s truly odd encounters with his fellow man. A Christmas comedy for the little bit of humbug in all of us.

Naughty. . . But Nice! - Lunchbox Theatre
December 5 -17, 2017

Four Actors, Four Great Years: Naughty… but Nice is back for some Four Play! Come join everyone’s favourite sweet but saucy celebration of the holiday season. The Forte Musical Guild promises to bring back some of your favourite tunes from past productions but will surprise you with new music that will remind you why every year, Naughty… but Nice is on your must-see list!

Check back for changes and updates to other shows on the stage and screen this holiday season!
