Summer is officially here and downtown Calgary is working overtime to make sure everyone has something to do. This means a jam packed week of fun, so make sure to check out our “Also This Week” section to get an extended preview!

ABORIGINAL AWARENESS WEEK OPENING CEREMONIES

Over the lunch hour, the Honouring Mother Earth Opening Ceremonies Committee will be hosting the 7th annual Aboriginal Awareness Week Opening Ceremonies event at Olympic Plaza in Calgary. The committee theme of this year’s event is “Giving back to community”.

This is a FREE event and open to all. This free and extended lunch hour event will run from 10:30 am – 2:30 pm and feature free burgers and environmentally friendly water containers.

Entertainment will be provided by a variety of groups, including: Armond Duck Chief, a Canadian singer and songwriter of country music, who was a Juno Award nominee for Aboriginal Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2016 for his album The One and is a member of the Siksika Nation. Saskia Dejong will also be providing entertainment. A well-known fiddler who will provide an excellent show for the audience. In addition to the regular program, a special community lead recognition presentation will be presented to a Wilton LittleChild, who is a lawyer, former member of Parliament and has worked with the Truth and Reconciliation work in Canada.

The event site is open from 10:45 am - 2:00 pm with the formal part of the agenda from 11:45 am - 1:00 pm​

ARTS COMMONS PRESENTS NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY​
June 21, 2022

Arts Commons, in partnership with Sled Island, IRIM (Indigenous Resilience in Music), Drum Beat, and CBC Calgary are proud to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples day with a free Mini Pow Wow featuring traditional drumming, song and dance, a meet-and-greet, workshop, and mini-performance by Hip-Hop duos Snotty Nose Rez Kids and Mob Bounce.

The day also features a selection of films from imagineNATIVE – the world’s largest presenter of Indigenous film.

Join us for these FREE, all-ages events! No ticket or RSVP is needed.

Location: Immediately outside centre court (8th Ave), and inside the Arts Learning Centre.

CALGARY TRACK TAKEOVER

Canada’s first ever street track meet will be taking place on June 23rd, 2018 in downtown Calgary. The Calgary Track Takeover will bring some of Canada’s top male and female Olympic performers to Olympic Plaza to compete in the following 3 events; 100M dash, Pole vault, and high jump. Come out and watch some of the best athletes in the world showcase the sport of Athletics in a fun environment where fans can truly be a part of the action in a festival environment.
