What’s Up in YYC

This week: August 5 to 11

A four-day week is the best week! Plus there are a ton of exciting festivities lighting up #DowntownYYC, including a delicious foodie festival that will treat your taste buds and leave your tummy happy and more than full!

Taste of Calgary: the city’s most appetizing outdoor festival of food and drinks is back for its 23rd year at Eau Claire’s Festival Plaza (Barclay Parade and 3 Street SW) August 8th to 11th, 2019. This year’s blend of international cuisines will treat your taste buds to flavors from African, East Indian, Italian, Spanish, Asian and others; all represented by over 70 of the Calgary’s most unique restaurants and beverage companies.

Come down and try our sample-sized menu items that are perfect for a bite-size taste of Calgary’s great cuisine and most unique beverages. Buy Taste sampling tickets for $1.00 each right at the event and use them to pay for any of the food or beverage menu items at the festival. Admission to the festival is free and includes a taste of Calgary’s incredible local entertainers – live on the Main Stage.

YYC Jam: The Balance Foundation is proud to present YYC JAM and Street Festival. This inaugural and annual 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament will be held in the streets of downtown Calgary and Stephen Avenue with the Calgary Tower acting as our iconic backdrop.

Cirque de Soleil Costume Display at The Core: LUZIA brings grand visual surprises with jaw-dropping acrobatics to Calgary from August 16 through September 22, 2019. It takes you to an imaginary Mexico, like in a waking dream, where light (“luz” in Spanish) quenches the spirit and rain (“Lluvia”) soothes the soul. Humans in costume, wowing audiences with their incredible stunts and creating surrealistic series of grand visual surprises. It’ll take you to different parts of the country – the desert, oceans, and mountains – all without leaving your seat.

If you’re ready to be thoroughly entertained, you’ll want to catch their month-long costume display at the CORE. The display can be found on the second level glass bridge near Guest Services. Visit the display during mall hours August 13 – September19, 2019.

Heritage Day Festival: Come join us for the 42nd annual Heritage Day Festival at Olympic Plaza! Come for 6 hours of multicultural performances, ethnic foods, and unique handicrafts. Explore the artisan booths, get face painted into a lion, frolic in the water, try a new dish, or simply soak up the sun in front of the stage and enjoy the folk performances

Salsa On the Street 2019: Expo Latino wants to show off Calgary’s fantastic downtown area and help you let loose. After Canada Day celebration, events will take place every Friday from 6-9 on the East 100 block of Stephen Ave. These are free events with no cost and no need to sign up in advance. Just come on down and dance Salsa with us!

Explore #DowntownYYC on a Lime Scooter: take one for whirl, but don’t forget a helmet – safety first!

Shakespeare by the Bow – A Midsummer Night’s Dream: This summer, come together with the Calgary community to celebrate and support Alberta’s emerging artists in a gorgeous natural setting. One of Shakespeare’s most popular works, A Midsummer Night’s Dream follows four young lovers and a group of six amateur actors through the forest as they are influenced and manipulated by a band of forest-dwelling fairies. Join us in Prince’s Island Park for this thrilling chase of love, identity and confusion.

Walk the Pride: The rainbow and trans flag crosswalks are back and here to stay – have you checked them out yet?

#IAMDOWNTOWN Summer Stage: Join us this summer for some excellent music! Located on the 100 East block of Stephen Avenue Walk, outside the Telus Convention Centre, all performances are free and outdoors.
