This week: August 19 to 25

This week we’re eating our way through Calgary’s culinary scene, celebrating the beginning of Pride in the city, and enjoying the last of summer in #DowntownYYC!

A & W Burgers to beat MS: Calling all burger fans! A&W Canada is celebrating the 11th annual Burgers to Beat MS campaign to raise awareness and funds to help those living with multiple sclerosis (MS). For every Teen Burger® sold across Canada on Thursday, August 22, 2019, A&W Canada will donate $2 to the MS Society of Canada. Over the last 11 years, A&W customers have raised more than $13 million for the MS Society of Canada and the aim is to raise $2 million this year.

Cirque du Soleil costume display at the Core: LUZIA brings grand visual surprises with jaw-dropping acrobatics to Calgary from August 16 through September 22, 2019. It takes you to an imaginary Mexico, like in a waking dream, where light (“luz” in Spanish) quenches the spirit and rain (“Lluvia”) soothes the soul. Humans in costume, wowing audiences with their incredible stunts and creating surrealistic series of grand visual surprises. It’ll take you to different parts of the country – the desert, oceans, and mountains – all without leaving your seat.

Salsa on the Street: Expo Latino wants to show off Calgary’s fantastic downtown area and help you let loose. After Canada Day celebration, events will take place every Friday from 6-9 on the East 100 block of Stephen Ave. These are free events with no cost and no need to sign up in advance. Just come on down and dance Salsa with us!

Summer Feast: Summer Feast, Calgary’s favourite summer food festival is back for a third year. The 10-day prix fixe culinary event will run from August 16 – 25, bringing together a select number of Calgary’s top chef-driven restaurants and enticing diners to get out and try some amazing food!

The Alley Party at the Grand: This reinvented party presents the Kate Hewko Fall 2019 Runway Show, Calgary’s top DJ line up, special guest music and dance performances, and a live art installation by NVRLND with take home art pieces for each guest! Elevate your night with a VIP experience that includes runway side seating and access to our catered Green Room. In our Green Room you can mingle with event musicians and artists with a private balcony view of the shows.

Shake, Stir, & Strainbow: From August 18 to September 2, Calgarians are encouraged to try unique Pride-themed cocktails from various Victoria Park and Centre City venues. Partial proceeds from the sale of each drink will be going towards supporting Skipping Stone Foundation. See participating locations here!

Summer Drag – Pride Edition at Sub Rosa: It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Pride Week kicks off on August 23rd but we thought we’d get the party started a little early. Join us as we welcome back the ladies from Your Holy Trinity for another edition of Sub Rosa Summer Drag, only this time they’re pulling out every single stop with a 90’s and 2000’s pop playlist! This is a show you won’t want to miss!

Calgary’s Official Poetry Slam Ft. Josie Veness: Calgary’s one and only official poetry slam, we’ve has been bringing competitive poetry to YYC since 2003. Slam poetry is a democratic platform for expression, so join as us a performer or as an audience member and see the top spoken word talent in the city!

#IAMDOWNTOWN Summer Stage: Join us this summer for some excellent music! Located on the 100 East block of Stephen Avenue Walk, outside the Telus Convention Centre, all performances are free and outdoors.
