What’s Up in YYC

This week: September 16 to 22

The September madness has hit in #DowntownYYC, so get ready for a week jam-packed with exciting events, vivid spectacles, and unmissable performances. From the 20th Anniversary of the Calgary International Film Festival to Beakerhead to Art in the City, this week is filled with the very best arts and culture that our city has to offer. It’s also the first week of Fall, so all the more reason to celebrate!

Beakerhead: Beakerhead is an exhibition of awe-inspiring artworks, fire-breathing contraptions and contemporary curiosities. It is a world stage for artists, engineers, designers, scientists, inventors and performers. It is a festival of creativity, ingenuity, technology and art of Brobdingnagian proportions.

Beakerhead’s eclectic array of workshops, shows and community happenings are held throughout Calgary during the five-day festival, culminating in a one-night immersive, interactive, delightful Spectacle on September 21 at Prince’s Island Park!

Art in the City: Celebrate the revitalization of a portion of laneway south of Stephen Avenue through a display of tactical public realm design intervention and sustainable design thinking. See the new mural installation by celebrated Canadian street artist Runt and take part in a guided art tour through the plazas, lobbies, and pedestrian spaces of downtown Calgary. See the dates and times for walking tours here!

The Launch of the Green Alley Project: The Calgary Downtown Association (CDA) has partnered with the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL) on a mission to change Calgary’s downtown fabric. The partnership has embarked on the Green Alley Project (GAP) , a pilot research project that looks at otherwise forgotten and gritty downtown alleyways — transforming them to places of beauty, creativity and value.

The first alley to be activated is located between Le Germaine on 9th Avenue SW and the 100-west block of Stephen Ave – entering off Centre Street or 1st St SW.  This transformation, which will include a wall mural, laneway painting and a proposed stormwater strategy. The urban activation installation will be designed and built in less than two weeks, in time for the TransformAlley launch party on September 20, 2019.

The 20th Annual Calgary International Film Fest: Don’t miss the 20th Anniversary Calgary International Film Festival taking place September 18-29 in the heart of downtown – spread between Eau Claire, Globe Cinema and Studio Bell National Music Centre.

Be the first to see 200 of the most talked-about and compelling movies of the year from around the world!  From Hollywood headliners, Gala events, documentaries + so much more, these are the must see films making their way to the awards podium including Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland in JUDY; Tim Roth and Clive Owen in the Opening Gala film THE SONG OF NAMES; music documentary ONCE WERE BROTHERS: ROBBIE ROBERTSON AND THE BAND; Eddie Murphy in the comedy DOLEMITE IS MY NAME – one of two Closing Gala films; and so much more!

Locked Library at the Central Library: From the age of the dinosaurs to the world of jet-packs and flying cars, get ready to travel through time at the Locked Library! On September 20, Calgary’s largest escape room returns with a night of sci-fi exploration. Once the clock starts, you’ll have two hours to puzzle your way through every timeline and escape out the front doors of the Central Library.

Kids at the Opera: Join the CPO and Calgary Philharmonic Chorus, along with two of Canada’s rising stars, in this family-oriented afternoon of opera’s greatest hits. Fun for kids and adults alike, explore the drama, humour, and passion of opera through the music of Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, and others. Come an hour early to try an instrument and meet musicians at the Instrument Discovery Zoo.

Calgary Aids Run and Walk: 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of the Calgary AIDS Walk & Run! Every year, HIV Community Link holds a 3-month long fundraiser for that culminates in a vibrant, fun event on September 22. The AIDS Walk is a place where people from across Calgary come together to show support and fundraise for those affected by HIV.

Check out a Stephen Avenue Live Performance: Stop by and check out the amazing line up of Street Performers Monday – Friday between 11:00am – 5:00pm at 6 stages along Stephen Avenue.
