What’s Up in YYC

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

This week: September 30 to October 6

We started the week off with snow and we’re ending it off with blue skies and sunshine. At least there’s lots happening that’ll keep us busy and our minds off of the turbulent weather patterns.  Oh Calgary, we love you!

Modern Masters With Jan Lisiecki: Jan Lisiecki is one of the most outstanding pianists in the world today, acclaimed for his extraordinary interpretive maturity, distinctive sound, and poetic sensibility. Lisiecki performs Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto, one of the most beloved concertos for piano and orchestra. Also featured are Pärt’s achingly beautiful tribute to Britten, and Sibelius’s masterful second symphony.

Strangers on the Train: a play by Craig Warner, based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith. A fateful encounter takes place between two strangers in the dining carriage of a train. Guy is a successful businessman with a nagging jealousy; Charles is a cold, calculating opportunist with a dark secret. A daring and dangerous plan develops from this casual conversation setting in motion a chain of events that will change the two men’s lives forever. Based on the celebrated novel by Patricia Highsmith made famous by the classic Alfred Hitchcock film, this high-stakes thriller will have you on the edge of your seat.

Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters: Ghostbuster fever has reached fever pitch in Calgary since the latest installment of the franchise’s filming in the city. Accordingly, the Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF) is presenting a screening of Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters, an in-depth documentary covering the making of the classic 1984 original. General admission tickets are $10 or $8 with a lifetime CUFF membership.

Calgary Spanish Film Festival: The Embassy of Spain, the Globe Cinema, the European Cultural Society of Calgary and the Aula Cervantes have partnered for the first-ever Calgary Spanish Film Festival. Four films never before seen in the city will screen over the course four Tuesdays in October. The titles are as follows (click on the title of each to watch its trailer): Get Her… If You Can (¿Qué Te Juegas?)The Realm (El Reino)Journey to a Mother’s Room (Viaje al Cuarto de Una Madre) and Love Beats (La Banda).
