What’s Up in YYC

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

This week: October 15 to 20

It’s a four-day week, so that means it’s basically already almost the weekend, right? We’ve got tons of fun happening in #DowntownYYC this week, including a Pasta Festival and a Gluten Free expo – oh the irony!

Pasta La Feasta: The first annual Pasta La Feasta culinary festival kicks off October 11, 2019. In honour of National Pasta Month, nine of Calgary’s best restaurants have teamed up to give back to the community. For two weeks leading up to World Pasta Day, each participating restaurant will feature a select pasta dish, with $3 from every dish sold going directly to The Alex Community Food Centre.

Sin & Gin Soiree Cabaret: Sin & Gin is Calgary’s best monthly Cabaret show that is filled with Music, Burlesque, Comedy, Cabaret, Drag and so much more!
This month we are celebrating the mysterious, the music and magic of the season! And this month it’s- ‘Masquerade!’

90th Anniversary Celebrating Persons Day: On October 18, the Famous 5 Foundation will host an event to commemorate Persons Day and celebrate the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Persons Case. The victory was a pivotal moment in our history, championed by five courageous Alberta women who petitioned for the inclusion of women in the definition of the word persons – giving women the ability to own property and to be elected to public office.

Gluten Free Expo: Sample, shop, and save on hundreds of gluten free products while learning from leading experts.

GEDFEST 2019: GEDfest (named for the late Gordon “Gord” Edgar Downie of The Tragically Hip) will be an evening of song in support of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. Held on the second anniversary of Downie’s death by a rare form of brain cancer, the event features performances by rock-and-blues act Soul’d Out and Tragically Hip tribute band Trickle Down.

Fluid Fest: Fluid Fest invites you to embrace experience and reflect on the now with a vibrant and audacious line-up of dance and live performance from around the world and around the block. 2019 features artists that capture our contemporary times, including queer ideas and expressions, women’s voices, and creative propositions that re-imagine and reframe the body in space.

Calgary Rocky Mountain Wine & Food Festival: Explore an incredible array of dynamic wines, smooth spirits, and downright delicious beers from around the globe, all under one roof. Cap it all off with tantalizing bites from some of Calgary’s best restaurants and food purveyors, and you’ve got a can’t-miss event. After all – that’s what we do, and with over 20 years under our belt, we’d say we’re nearly aged to perfection.

Downton Abbey Themed Afternoon Tea: The Hawthorn Dining Room & Bar is delighted to host Downton Abbey afternoon tea series in celebration of the highly anticipated Downton Abbey movie. The series will run each Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. from September 21 until October 27.

Check out a Stephen Avenue Live Performance: Stop by and check out the amazing line up of Street Performers Monday – Friday between 11:00am – 5:00pm at 6 stages along Stephen Avenue.
