What’s Up in YYC

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

This week: October 21 to 27

Things are getting spooky here in #DowntownYYC! From Ghost tours to scary movie marathons, haunted festivities are taking over the city as we gear up for the creepiest, ghoulish holiday of the year!

The Imaginairium – by Wordfest: Find some of the world’s tastiest writers at this year’s Imaginarium, October 14-23! This year’s Festival is going to be so much more than a Word Fest. You’ll discover the full gamete of Canada’s liveliest festival of authors and ideas.

Backseat Cinema at The Grand: Backseat Cinema aims to bring you a unique movie going experience every month. From Timeless classics to cult favorites, exciting action, gut-busting comedy, and much more, we’ll have specialty cocktails, entertainment and games themed around the movie of the month. For October, we’re screening Edgar Wright’s Rom-Com-Zom film, Shaun of the Dead!

12 Hour Halloween Movie Marathon: Do you have it in you? The Calgary Underground Film Festival is back with an all-night Horror Movie Marathon the Saturday before Halloween! Head to Globe Cinema on October 26 for 12 hours of movies, contests and more – 7 movies from 7 pm until 7 am the next morning. You can come for one, come for them all, or drop in and out. There’s no better way to prove that you’re a true horror film fanatic.

Sunday Opera Brunch: Get some Wagner with your waffles, Mozart with your muffins, and Bellini with your blinis. Experience an intimate and exclusive performance series featuring the stars of our season over a gourmet brunch at the Calgary Petroleum Club.

Calgary Ghost Tours: Join Calgary Ghost Tours for an evening of ghostly entertainment. Locals and visitors alike will be fascinated by these glimpses into the mischief, mayhem and murders of Calgary. All of their stories are enjoyed even by the sceptics amongst the group. Their tours include many local ghost stories and local history and are easily recognizable by the capes they are wearing and the lantern they carry, as groups are lead through the history and hauntings of Calgary

Pasta La Feasta: The first annual Pasta La Feasta culinary festival kicks off October 11, 2019. In honour of National Pasta Month, nine of Calgary’s best restaurants have teamed up to give back to the community. For two weeks leading up to World Pasta Day, each participating restaurant will feature a select pasta dish, with $3 from every dish sold going directly to The Alex Community Food Centre.

Fluid Fest: Fluid Fest invites you to embrace experience and reflect on the now with a vibrant and audacious line-up of dance and live performance from around the world and around the block. 2019 features artists that capture our contemporary times, including queer ideas and expressions, women’s voices, and creative propositions that re-imagine and reframe the body in space.

Downton Abbey Themed Afternoon Tea: The Hawthorn Dining Room & Bar is delighted to host Downton Abbey afternoon tea series in celebration of the highly anticipated Downton Abbey movie. The series will run each Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. from September 21 until October 27.

Check out a Stephen Avenue Live Performance: Stop by and check out the amazing line up of Street Performers Monday – Friday between 11:00am – 5:00pm at 6 stages along Stephen Avenue.
