What’s Up in YYC

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

This week: November 4 to 10

Welcome to the first full week of November! We began the week with an extra hour of sleep (thank you day light savings) and are eagerly awaiting the long-weekend in five short days. From Remembrance Day celebrations to Holiday festivities, we can guarantee that it’s going to be a jam-packed week in Downtown YYC!

War in Pieces A Pop Up at the Central Library: We are thrilled that our first fall pop-up gallery will be hosted by the new Calgary Central Library on November 4th and 5th. Our gallery reveals the challenges and rewards of military life, the trauma of combat, the depth of the bonds among soldiers and how the experience of war forever changes human perspective. A deep breadth of emotion is shared in these personal stories including amusement, pride, despair, love and gratitude. The War In Pieces exhibition provides an intimate glimpse of life in the Canadian military.

In Flanders Fields: This stunning work was our inaugural Remembrance play in 2010, when it received a Betty Mitchell Award nomination for Outstanding Production of a Musical. Based on the extraordinary life of Lt.-Col John McCrae, IN FLANDERS FIELDS sweeps from rural Ontario to the mud of the French trenches, revealing the brotherhood, love, and true humanity of one of Canada’s most famous poets. In Flanders Fields is a co-production with Forté Musical Theatre Guild. Tickets are $25.

Field of Crosses: Over 3600 crosses have been placed along Calgary’s Memorial Drive and will be there until November 11. Each cross memorializes an individual solider from Southern Alberta who has made the ultimate sacrifice during active duty protecting our country.

An Evening with Jason Mraz & Raining Jane: Come see this Grammy Award winner at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on Wednesday, November 6. Get your tickets here.

Free First Thursday at the Glenbow: On the First Thursday of every month, Glenbow is open late and admission is free from 5-9pm thanks to support from Servus Credit Union. Glenbow is committed to expanding the reach and impact of art and culture in our community. We want to provide meaningful experiences for all audiences, because we know that encounters with art, culture and history can change lives and inspire amazing things. See you at Free First Thursday Night!

JazzYYC Canadian Festival: JazzYYC is proud to announce the launch of the our 6th annual JazzYYC Canadian Festival! The Festival running from November 6th to 10th, 2019 is an exciting showcase of exceptional Canadian talent featuring an electrifying headliner show for jazz and blues fans alike.

Each November, European movies are presented in Calgary for you to enjoy good entertainment and multiculturalism within the magic of cinema. The 8th edition of the Calgary European Film Festival will take place in November 2-10, 2019, at the Globe Cinema. This year there are 22 countries participating and European cinema in Calgary.

Festival of Crafts: Signatures Festival of Crafts is a uniquely Canadian handmade marketplace in Calgary that features the works of over 230 artists, artisans, makers, and designers from coast-to-coast. Since 1986, the show has been one of Calgary’s premier holiday shopping events – an annual tradition where visitors can meet passionate creatives in person, hear their stories, and feel their works first-hand. Join us at the BMO Centre on the Stampede Grounds for an unforgettable experience and shop for handmade that lasts a lifetime.

Burger Fest: Chef Shawn and his team are firing up the grill for our third annual Burger Fest at The Guild! From October 18 to November 10, join them for lunch, dinner or weekend brunch and feast on one of our signature burger creations. From a French onion mushroom melt to an Atlantic salmon burger, served with your choice of soup, green salad or house-cut chips, we’ll be dishing up something for everyone!
