This Week: November 25 to December 1

It’s truly the most wonderful time of the year! The holidays have been thoroughly embraced in Downtown Calgary with so many exciting festivities for you and the whole family to add to your calendar. From iconic standby’s, and  new breakthrough performances, to light displays that light up the entire city, and holiday shopping at local markets and pop-ups right in Downtown Calgary. Come celebrate the holidays with us and help us spread the Christmas cheer throughout the city!

Brookfield Holiday Market: Check out the Brookfield Holiday Market on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 from 10 am – 2 pm on the Main Floor of Brookfield Place, Calgary. The Duelling Piano Kings will be providing entertainment while you browse. Shop from a variety of delicious holiday goodies, gift baskets, household items, ornaments and more! Vendors include Hudson’s Bay, Urban Fare, Tokki Boutique, Fairbairn Glass, Bad Sisters Making Good, just to name a few. November 26

CUFF.Docs Documentary Film Festival: CUFF.Docs Documentary Film Festival showcases the best in non-fiction films. The 5-day event presented by the Calgary Underground Film Festival screens 12 full-length features, as well as shorts, varying in subject, style and genres within the art form. The 7th annual CUFF.Docs runs Nov 27-Dec 1, 2019 at Globe Cinema. Tickets to all films are on sale now.  November 27 – December 1

A Christmas Carol: A holiday classic that sees Ebenezer Scrooge visited by the spirits, Christmas Past, Present and Yet to come, to help him see the beauty of life. November 29 – December 23

Holiday POPS with Rune + Jens: The trumpets sound the start of the festive season at the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Music Director, Rune Bergmann, and internationally acclaimed trumpeter, Jens Lindemann, team up to swing in the holidays with an upbeat selection of merry music. November 29 – 30

Proarts Presents Free Handbell Concert: The BRHMS Ringers are advanced ringers from the newly formed Bow River Handbell Musicians Society (BRHMS). This group of dedicated adult musicians perform in and around the Calgary area to bring the musical art form that is handbell ringing to the people of southern Alberta. December 4

The Lion, the witch and the Wardrobe: The thrilling, well-known tale takes four children from a dusty English mansion to a mythical, far-away world gripped in an epic battle between the forces of good and evil. Helped along by the fawn, Mr. Tumnus, the friendly Beaver family and a forest of talking animals, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy take centre stage in the struggle to free Narnia from the forces of the White Witch as they await the triumphant return of Aslan the Lion. November 19 – December 29

Junior Claus: Junior Claus is the only son of Santa and Mrs. Claus. Like many teenagers, Junior is reluctant to take over the family business. Unsure of himself, Junior puts more faith in his technological inventions than in good old-fashioned Christmas magic, much to the chagrin of his father. But, when a sudden drop in Christmas spirit renders Santa incapable of making the great ride, Junior must take the reins. November 29 – December 22

Northern Reflections Window Exhibition: Experience the holiday inspired windows in Downtown Calgary and interact with them through augmented reality on an app on your phone!

Naughty, but Nice – Six in the City: With rave reviews and sell-out crowds to our credit, we couldn’t stop with the fifth edition, so Forte is proud to present our Sixth Sensational Year of saucy holiday tunes, Naughty but Nice: Six in the City! Come join us for everyone’s favourite sweet but risqué holiday celebration. A hit parade of favourites from the past and a smattering of new tunes will remind you why, every year, Naughty but Nice is on your must-see list.   Winner of three Calgary Critics’ Awards and the Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding Production of a Musical, we look forward to celebrating our Sixth Anniversary with you this holiday season! December 5 – 22

Handel’s Messiah: Hallelujah! This triumphant Christmas staple returns. Grammy Award-winner Jeannette Sorrell, Artistic Director and harpsichordist of acclaimed ensemble Apollo’s Fire, has built an international reputation as a force in the reawakening demand for early music. Sorrell conducts this quintessential holiday classic alongside the CPO and hand-picked soloists from her ensemble. December 6 – 7

CORE Christmas Tree Light: Get into the holiday spirit with The CORE for a special night of live entertainment, Christmas tree lighting, fireworks, and of course, Santa. The night begins with opportunities to watch sponsors decorate Christmas trees. There will be entertainment and live music, and free Santa photos (monetary donations will be gratefully accepted by The Magic of Christmas). The night culminates with the lighting of The Core’s famous 45-foot tree. Until December 18

Holiday Performances at the CORE: The CORE is excited to open their doors to the Calgary arts community this holiday season! They will be welcoming performance groups of all ages from all over the city. All performances will take place over the lunch hour from 12 PM -1 PM (unless otherwise noted below) in front of our 45ft. Christmas Tree. December 7 – 23

Santa Photos at the Core: Photos with Santa are complimentary with Fotohub! Fotohub has taken the photo booth concept and given it an upgrade. Photos are to be taken with your smartphone so you can easily share them with friends and family! If you post the photo with Santa and use #FindChristmasDowntown your photo will automatically print out at our hashtag printer! November 29 – December 22

Stephen Avenue Walk Christmas Lights: Enjoy the lights along Stephen Avenue Walk, and check out the new singing lights in the 100 West block by Winners where you can belt out your favourite holiday classics. 

Christmas in Rome: The Festival Chorus welcomes you to attend the first concert in our 61st season. Christmas in Rome will be the sixth instalment in the travelogue-themed concerts – in the past they have brought us to Venice, London, Paris, Seville, Leipzig to name a few. Christmas music inspired by and composed for ‘the eternal city’.  Featured work is Ottorino Respighi’s melodic and appealing Laud to the Nativity of the Lord. Additional selections by Palestrina, Schubert, the beloved Gesù Bambino, audience carols, and seasonal folk favorites. December 7

Downtown Christmas Market: The Christmas Market is popping up at Gulf Canada Square again this year! Not loving the snow, ice and wind so much? Well, luckily, they are accessible through Calgary’s #plus15 #walkways and have all the perfect gifts for those special loved ones. Come check out the festive CHRISTMAS MARKET in the main lobby area on the first floor on December 10th, from 10am-2pm. They will have local producers of food & beverages, art, fashion, jewellery, home decor, and health & wellness. It is perfect for all your Christmas shopping! December 10

Calgary Night Market – Holiday Edition: Friday nights inside Eau Claire, Calgary Night Market takes over for an evening of fun holiday shopping. Come and shop local to over 40 vendors. Handmade, Arts, baked goods, pottery, jewelry and much more. December 6 – 20

Zoolights: ZOOLIGHTS, presented by Olympia Trust Company, is back for the 23rd time! Calgary’s award winning, magical holiday tradition will be glowing for six weeks of perfect family-friendly fun. If you can’t get down to the zoo, stop by the Zoolights display by Milestones on Stephen Avenue. November 22 – January 4

Go Skating at Olympic Plaza: Experience downtown Calgary’s most beautiful open rink facilities.  Bring your family and friends and enjoy Canada’s favourite pastime. Don’t forget about free skate rentals!

Teddy Bear Toss: Cheer on the Hitmen as they play the Red Deer Rebels in their iconic game where they collect Teddy Bears for the Alberta Children’s Hospital.  December 1

Christmas Star: The second concert of the 2019 – 2020 our season brings together the talents of Michelle Todd, Soprano, Jay Michalak, Trumpet and the members of Cum Vino Cantus under the leadership of Michael Coburn, Artistic Director. These wonderful local artists join the Calgary Civic Symphony in offering our 2019 – 2020 Christmas concert, “Christmas Star” which will take place on Sunday, December 8th at 2:30 pm at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, Arts Commons.

Paul Brandt’s Country Christmas: Paul Brandt continues to make an indelible mark on country music in Canada and beyond, and now the most awarded male Canadian country artist in history is home for the holidays! Brandt joins the CPO in an unforgettable evening featuring a mix of Christmas classics and his own original music. This Country Music Hall of Fame inductee with a voice and heart of gold will take you on a holiday journey! For this concert, the CPO partners with the Taylor Family Foundation to bring the gift of great music to Calgary. December 11 – 12

Last Christmas by Lunchbox Theatre: Last Christmas, Jake’s wife Marge was still alive and every ritual was observed. This year, between two feuding daughters and a delinquent grandson, Jake’s holidays will be anything but traditional. This heartwarming comedy offers a contemporary look at the joys and challenges of the season, and reminds us that family just might be the greatest gift of all. November 21 – December 21

The World’s Largest Ugly Sweater Party: Taking place in over 100 bars and restaurants around the world, come and be a part of this Guinness World Record attempt. Don your ugliest Christmas sweater and come party with us from 2pm! December 2
