Date Night Downtown

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

If the long winter months have turned your date nights out into date nights in, it’s time to bundle up and head downtown. While the dinner and a movie combo is classic, spark something special with these romantic restaurants, experiences and performances that will keep the flame alive – even on a chilly night.

Teatro Ristorante200 8 Ave SE

One of the city’s most timeless and high-quality dining destinations, Teatro is a cornerstone in Calgary’s dining scene. This intimate yet upscale restaurant offers classic Italian food with a touch of French – arguably the most romantic cuisine. Whether it’s comforting pasta, seasonal risotto or other Italian dishes, opt for the tasting menu for the expert’s selections. Ask for a tour of Teatro’s extensive wine cellar housed in the bank vaults below the dining room – the collection is sure to impress any date!

Arts Commons  – 205 8 Ave SE

Take a quick walk from your romantic dinner over to the city’s best venue for music, theatre and dance. The winter lineup has something for everyone, from Cirque Flip Fabrique: Blizzard, an enthusiastic display of acrobatics and original music in a gorgeously snowy set, to Queer Blind Date, a spontaneous theatre performance that celebrates and explores the peculiar curiosities of queer romance, to live music performances and tributes of Motown, Abba and even a Sunday Afternoon at the Opera.

Koto Sushi Lounge435 4 Ave SW

The contemporary ambiance and meticulous service makes Koto Sushi Lounge a Calgary favourite for fans of exceptional sushi and Japanese cuisine, from traditional selections to inspired creations. Try the fresh sea urchin as part of their limited Uni Fest menu, and enjoy $5 drinks during happy hour, running Monday to Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Glenbow Museum130 9 Ave SE

As one of the largest museums in western Canada, the Glenbow Museum has a collection of over one million artifacts and artworks. Calgary’s art museum is always full of vibrant experiences that showcase art and culture from our own backyard and around the world. Plan your date night on a budget and get in free the first Thursday evening of every month.

The Shoe and Canoe Public House209 4 Ave SE

For a more casual pick, The Shoe and Canoe is an approachable public house that features locally-sourced Canadian food and drink in a fun and upscale atmosphere. Nestled within the Delta Hotels Calgary Downtown, this isn’t your standard hotel eatery. Shoe and Canoe specializes in craft beers, with 12 local beers on tap and a food menu of beer-worthy standards updated with a Canadiana twist.

Globe Cinema617 8 Ave SW

Looking to stick with a conventional date night out? Take in a classic or independent art movie at the Globe. This art house theatre brings in quality first-run films and partakes in both local and international film festivals. The roster of shows changes frequently and always has interesting selections.

Stephen Avenue Walk8 Ave, 1 St SE to 4 St SW

Start or end your evening with a stroll on Stephen Avenue Walk in the heart of downtown. Enjoy Calgary’s only historic pedestrian mall featuring shopping, restaurants and entertainment venues, and take in the art installations and lively ambiance of the avenue. Find the iconic large white sculptures (the Galleria Trees) between 2nd and 3rd Street. They are equipped with lights and music, adding to the vibrancy of the avenue.

Skating at Olympic Plaza  – 228 8 Ave SW

Grab your skates and head to the outdoor rink at Olympic Plaza for a romantic night-time glide. The skating rink is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. until mid March. Skate rentals and skate sharpenings are available from the Skate Hut, located on the southwest corner of Olympic Plaza.
