Radioheaded in Downtown Calgary

by Sophy Kors · 0 comments

Radioheaded 2: A Listening Party is described on the One Yellow Rabbit website as a “physical exploration of Radiohead’s latest album In Rainbows”.  The show is performed by the beAutifulyoungaRtisTs, a group that was formed after OYR’s Summer Lab Intensive, and directed by Denise Clarke.

I told my date we were booked for Tuesday night, what for? Just go with it.  Because it’s not immediately obvious what to expect.  What kind of show was this going to be? Physical exploration? Wil Knoll, who’s in the show and writes for our blog when he has a moment, said in Stage Craft:

You ever been to a laser light show at the planetarium? (Do they even still do those anymore?)

It’s not exactly like that….

Hmm, well at least I know I’m not the only one who’s having a hard time knowing what to expect.

For me, it was an in-person music video, a visual accompaniment to the music.  There was a bit of a story, which I won’t give away, but is definitely a classic. The physical exploration (not quite dance and not quite not dance) supported each song, adding to it without overpowering it.  My favourite were the glowing stickmen.  That’s right, and if you see it you’ll know.

The Big Secret Theatre is one of my favourite venues in Calgary, because it’s small enough to feel a part of the show, but not too small.  And there’s a bar in the theatre for before and after the show.  It’s like going to a friend’s house to hang out, if you have a really cool friend with a big house.

Bottom line, if you like Radiohead you’ll like the show.  If you’re not sure if you like Radiohead or not, I think you’ll like the show. And if you hate Radiohead and you still go, let me know what you think in the comments.
