Street Style Huntress: Chic Stylings

by Aldona Barutowicz · 0 comments

Upon first meeting Sandy Jung at a fashion event a few months ago, what struck me most about her right away is her authenticity and sweet nature, and it’s become even more apparent as I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know her. What really stood out to me is that she has this beautiful full life (wife, mom and career woman), while also putting herself out there to share her personal style and love of fashion on her blog and on social media as Chic Stylings (http://chicstylingsblog.com). To top it off, she’s also really excited about our city, and very supportive of the local happenings and artists in Calgary.

As someone whose personal style is all about bold colour, sequins and much layering, what draws me to Sandy is her love of neutrals and classic pieces - she does them so well, how could I not be? So make sure you read all of her wisdom below, and follow her fantastic style adventures online as well!

How would you describe your personal style?

I like to keep my style simple and classic. Minimalistic with clean lines yet chic with trendy flare for practical everyday wear. I gravitate towards the neutrals and basics, ensuring very piece is versatile for anywhere, dressing up or down.

What are some of your influences when it comes to fashion?

I love observing the streets of Calgary for fashion influence.  I used to shop exclusively at large retail stores and malls but there is so much amazing fashion right here under our noses, designed and/or curated by local artists, designers and boutiques all with extreme talent!

I love the fashion styles of bloggers Becky Hillyard (www.cellajane.com @cellajaneblog) and Makayla Macafee (www.fahionablykay.com @fashionablykay), who both also inspired me to start blogging about fashion.

What are some of your favorite stores and shopping destinations in Downtown Calgary?

In downtown Calgary, my go-to’s are Simons, Aritzia, Club Monaco, Banana Republic, Tristan, Holt Renfrew, and The Bay.

What are some of your favourite Downtown YYC spots?

Working in the downtown core during the week means I usually grab & go, but also love to dine-in when I have more time.

For grab & go: Wise & Wright, Sunterra Market, Eve’s Café in Simons. For dine-in: Charcut, Teatro, River Café, Rose Garden Thai, The Cactus Club, Earls Bankers Hall, OEB.

What are some of your favourite trends right now?

Kimonos, wide leg pants, joggers, bomber jackets and anything off the shoulder and with layers of ruffles. Distressed denim will always be my thing - I don’t think I own a pair without some sort of rips! I’m also loving the look of belt bags worn at on the waist or cross body style.

What fashion advice would you give to others?

Wear what makes you feel good from the inside out and what inspires you to BE YOU! As much as fashion is about what you wear on the outside, it really starts with who you are on the inside. Be the strongest and most authentic version of yourself and you will look as beautiful as you feel.

Tell us more about the projects and work that you’re involved with.

My main focus right now is building my fashion and lifestyle influencing brand, Chic Stylings By Sandy (http://www.chicstylingsblog.com and  @chic_stylings). Born & raised here, Calgary has given me so much so I believe in giving back by promoting all the wonderful things happening in and around this great city. My work is all about sharing the inspiration I get from experiences with talented people, businesses and services in the fashion and lifestyle-related communities.

How does your work influence your personal style?

In addition to blogging and influencing I am also a wifey, mommy, and work in finance/accounting in the oil & gas industry.  Although each of these roles is very different from the others, my personal style for each remains the same. I don’t believe in having a separate wardrobe for each role - I am the same person on the inside with the same tastes for style so I don’t dress any different. I may play up or down an outfit or change my shoes depending on the occasion, but generally, I don’t style an outfit on my blog that I wouldn’t wear to the office or while running errands or hanging out with family and friends.

What are some of your future aspirations?

When I retire from my oil & gas job in a few years I hope to travel the world and continue my influencing by expanding my perspectives on all fashion, travel, food and all things lifestyle-related to my readers. But most of all, whether locally or abroad, I want to continue building friendships & relationships within a community of fans, creators, businesses and brands who all love working together to support one another towards success. This to me is the most rewarding part of blogging and influencing.

Anything you’d like to add or tell us about?

One of the most common questions I’ve been asked is why and how I decided to start blogging at my middle-aged-life. At the age of 46,  a mother of a 19-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter and after 20+ years as an accountant, I decided to try stepping out of my introverted comfort zone into the more extroverted “creative” world. I’ve always had a passion for fashion, but once I started creating my blog initially as just a hobby, it soon blossomed into a rewarding world of influencing, connection and relationships! I would like to encourage everyone that it’s never too late no matter what age or stage, to take a chance on a completely different direction and follow an instinct or passion. You might be surprised at what gifts and talents you discover about yourself - even if you are middle-aged!
