Magnetic North Theatre Festival Calgary 2012

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

Canada’s traveling English language theatre festival Magnetic North is currently underway in Calgary! Running until June 23rd, you still have a chance to catch some of Canada’s freshest and groundbreaking plays.

This weekend is your chance to catch Oil & Water, a play chronicaling the true story of a man who was the only surviving member African-American on a shipwreck near Newfoundland. This story, set in 1942 explores themes of race and humanity, and is scored by an a capella choir that blends traditional Maritime folk with African-American insprired gospel music.

This is just one of the many groundbreaking plays at the festival this year, and once the festival is over, it heads back to Ottawa next year. It’s true, the Magnetic North Theatre Festival visits a new city every 2 years so it won’t likely come back to Calgary for several years to come.

Catch all the action while you can, including the guaranteed to sell out performance by Rick Mercer in Calgary called “Rick Mercer: A Nation Worth Ranting About

Check out the Magnetic North Theatre Festival website for full schedule and tickets.
