Up on the Roof: downtownfood

by Kait Kucy · 0 comments

With 2,405 hours of annual sunshine in Calgary every year it just makes sense to somehow harness that wonderous natural energy and turn it into something good. Chef + Owner of downtownfood, Darren MacLean, is doing exactly that with an incredible rooftop initiative that will change the way you think about growing your own food.

The modern bistro located on 8th Avenue has opened up their beautiful and tiny rooftop garden earlier this summer with hopes of encouraging other local businesses to think ‘up’ and take advantage of our seasonally blue skies. Not only has the garden been a great learning experience for the restaurant’s staff and partners involved, but they have also garnered the public’s interest in where there food is coming from.

Darren hopes to see even more urban gardens popping up over the next year and maybe even a possibility for rooftop bees at some point like they have in New York City and San Francisco. And with so much sunshine here, it seems a shame not to take advantage of it!
