DRESSING FOR A CHINOOK

Well, that has got to be a record high for a Calgary weekend in January!

With the sun shining, warm winds and the snow just about completely obliterated in downtown Calgary - you can’t help but get a little spring feverish kick in your step. The one tricky part of a Chinook weather is how to dress appropriately. While every inch of us wants to break out the flip-flops and shorts, we have to respect the fact that, yes, it is still the middle of winter and a snowstorm is probably right around the corner. But it is too warm to be toting your parka and toque all over town - finding the middle ground is key to enjoying these Chinook winds to the max.

I’ve developed a full-proof plan to help you avoid those big slushy puddles, keep cool as you navigate the city and also look seasonally appropriate as you jaunt from the office to the pub.

First of all, you need a pair of waterproof boots. I know it seems excessive when you already have winter boots, leather boots, hiking boots, etc. but if you don’t want to have soaked feet by the time you arrive to work, having a great pair of rubber boots will make all of the difference.

Dressing in layers is key to staying both cool and warm during a Chinook. Wear a light cotton or canvas jacket that has enough room to throw a sweater underneath. This will make transitioning from indoors to outdoors a breeze, i.e. no unnecessary sweating thanks to your parka upon entering your office.

The sun has been out in full force so make sure your eyes are protected by some cute shades.

Along with the temperature changes, the wind can really dry out your skin.

During a Chinook, a toque can often be too hot so opt for a felt hat that keeps your head a bit cooler but also keeps you looking amazing!

Again, layers are key. Have some go-to sweaters and cardigans for those days when you might need an extra later.

That sun sure is beautiful! Keep your lips protected with some SPF lip balm.
