Fiestaval 2010 in downtown Calgary

by Leah Wong · 0 comments

Calgary’s Latin American celebration Fiestaval will take over Olympic Plaza this weekend (July 24 and 25).  This two-day festival is free and family oriented - with the lovely weather we’re expecting this weekend it’s a good place to bring the kids.

On Saturday the entertainment kicks off at noon and runs until 9:30pm.  Sunday entertainment starts at noon and finishes at 8:15pm.  In this time there will be 24 Latin shows, three international bands, and dance lessons for anyone wanting to learn to samba.

The musical styles of the international bands vary, as do their countries of origin.  Los Alegres de Teran - playing Sunday night at 7pm - comes from Mexico, their music is classified as norteño.  This style is characterized by the accordion and the bajo sexto, or sixth bass.  From El Salvador comes the all-girl group Baby’s Swing.

Throughout the plaza there will also be vendors selling Latin food, giving you the opportunity to try a variety of foods.  There will also be local vendors also selling cultural arts and crafts.
