PORTRAITS IN MOTION AT THEATRE JUNCTION GRAND - January 18th - 21st, 2017

Portraits in Motion is presented by Theatre Junction and One Yellow Rabbit Performance Theatre as part of the 31st annual High Performance Rodeo

Volker Gerling is a passionate creator of flip books and a fearless traveller. Since 2003 he has walked over 3,500km throughout Germany, inviting people to visit his travelling Flipbook “thumb cinema” exhibition, and creating flipbook portraits of some of the people he meets along the way.

In Portraits In Motion, Gerling shows the audience a selection of his favourite flipbook portraits by holding each one under a video camera, projecting the moving images on to a large screen as he flips through their pages. The images come to life as he shares the heart-warming and moving stories behind each encounter.

Tickets and show information can be found here.

CATHY JONES: STRANGER TO HARD WORK - Begins January 17th, 2017

A hilarious evening with comedian, Canadian icon, and one of the funniest women in television, Cathy Jones (This Hour Has 22 Minutes, CODCO). This award-winning performer returns to the stage with a hugely entertaining new solo show that is part stand-up, part confessional, and completely hilarious. Cathy Jones gets up close and personal, reminding us that sometimes the biggest and best laughs are at ourselves.

PROARTS PRESENTS: JOHN RUTHERFORD - January 18th, 2017

John Rutherford is a singer/songwriter and bluesman based in Calgary. His work, laced with the tonality, phrasing and spirit of the blues, fuses a broad and eclectic range of influences creating a sound distinctly his own. Amidst a long and storied career Rutherford has performed and recorded with numerous bands and artists including The Highwater Jug Band, The Hoodoo Sons, The Ronnie Hayward Band, Front Porch Roots Revue and John Wort Hannam to name a few. A long association and a stint as a member of the house band during the blues heyday of Calgary’s now legendary King Edward Hotel provided John with the opportunity to meet, learn from and perform with many of the great blues legends of our time.

This is a free performance and takes place at the Cathedral Church (7 Ave and 1 St SE).

MASTERWORKS: MENDELSSOHN, HAYDN & SHOSTAKOVICH - January 20th & 21st, 2017

Mendelssohn’s immensely popular Violin Concerto is beautifully interpreted by rising Canadian talent Timothy Chooi. A prolific composer, Haydn’s No. 99, one of the famed “London Symphonies”, provides a harmonious interlude before Shostakovich’s upbeat, almost breezy Ninth Symphony, a work he personally considered “a joyful little piece,” brings the evening to a glorious crescendo.

This takes place at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Tickets can be purchased here.

WAIT UNTIL DARK - Begins January 21st, 2017

When a blind woman living in New York City’s iconic Greenwich Village finds herself terrorized by a trio of men, she’s in a desperate situation - until she discovers her blindness might just prove to be her secret weapon. This new adaptation of Frederick Knott’s classic thriller is sure to turn down the lights and turn up the thrills.

Showtimes vary, please see Vertigo Theatre’s website for details.
