Critical Cinema in Calgary, Upcoming Events

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

Calgary Cinematheque is Calgary’s leading champion of art cinema, classic film retrospectives, and alternative movie-making voices from across the globe. In the remainder of our tenth season, we are proudly showcasing six of the finest films from German master filmmaker Wim Wenders, and celebrating four of the most acclaimed foreign titles topping the charts of international critics’ 2016 must-see lists. Every one of these rarities is not to be missed. These treasures are brought in exclusively for one-night only screenings for Calgary filmgoers to cherish and collectively experience together in the dark of one of our prized art houses: The Globe Cinema.

Mark Thursdays on your calendars!

Starting on February 2nd until March 16th, we will be digging into the extensive catalogue of the enigmatic filmmaker Wim Wenders. Each film, from his early low budget road films in the early seventies, through the adrenaline rush of The American Friend (1977), to his tormented angels in the triumphant Berlin classic Wings of Desire (1987), highlights a lifelong search for personal meaning, connection, and grounding in a modern alienating world. Their photographic calm is bold, and the residual effect of these restored existential classics will haunt you for days after.

Calgary Cinematheque also works tirelessly to bring new and dazzling masterworks from the latest international film circuit. These rough diamonds will never otherwise see the screens of Calgary or find typical theatrical distribution. Our Contemporary World Cinema series represents the finest in distinct and brave new global cinema. Voices from around the world like France, Portugal, Japan, Iran, and China create our annual mosaic sampling of the best in undistributed and critically vetted cinematic gold. Titles like The Human Surge (2016), and a tribute to the late Abbas Kiarostami’s final efforts grace our local screens ever so briefly, but beautifully remind us of the endless poetry and varied storytelling forms film can take.

As a local hub for cinema as an art form, Calgary Cinematheque has a dedicated member base and 700+ subscribers ranging from passionate cinephiles to the simply curious and adventurous among the filmgoing public. We build community around the enjoyment of cinema art in a shared theatrical experience. We offer Calgarians the chance to experience significant cinema in its full grandeur: on the big screen surrounded by an audience of film lovers. Join us in fostering a deeper and lasting critical cinema culture in Calgary.
