Keeping it low-key on Canada Day 2017

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

Year after year, the celebrations for Canada Day get bigger (and better) and so do the crowds. Taking part in the Canada Day festivities isn’t for everyone, but if you still are coming downtown and want to do something a little lower key, we have some ideas for you.

Shakespeare by the Bow - Prince’s Island Park

This summer, follow our brave heroine Rosalind, and her cousin Celia, as they escape the rigid rules of court life for the wilds and freedom of the Forest of Arden. Here, they will fall in and out of love, encounter one of Shakespeare’s greatest fools and discover the value of true friendship. Theatre Calgary will be performing at 7 PM on July 1.

The Fraid Knot at James Joyce - 114 8th Avenue SW

Come and enjoy Calgary’s best East Coast Band live on Canada Day! Fraid Knot will be performing from 7 PM until 12 AM. Admission is FREE. Come grab a bite and a pint at James Joyce before checking out the fireworks.

Otafest 2017 - Calgary Telus Convention Centre, 120 9 Ave SE

Otafest is an annual conference for anime festival for the curious and the enthusiasts. The festival is a creative outlet for fans, an occasion where they can show their passion and appreciation of the hobby. Fans can show off the costumes they have made, the music videos they have created, and the art they have painted and drawn.

Otafest will be hosting an exclusive rooftop patio party for attendees to come and watch the Canada Day fireworks from 9-11pm. The Marriott rooftop patio will be providing food and drink along with alcoholic beverages for purchase.

The Palace Theatre BBQ - 219 8 Ave SW

Executive Chef Trevor Atamanchuk of The Palace Theatre will be previewing their Stampede menu during Canada Day at their patio party. Walk up, grab a bite and continue on to your next activity. For a full list of menu items and prices check out What’s cooking for Stampede on Stephen Ave.

Earls Bankers Hall - 315 8 Ave SW

Ladies and Gents, pull out your best red and whites. We have a celebration to attend! Join Earls Bankers Hall Saturday, July 1st from 12-5pm to raise a glass to our beautiful country.

They’ll live music, face painting, giveaways, Caesars and bacon. . . lots and lots of bacon! Did I mention they will have JARS of BACON! Cause they’re doing bacon in a jar for $1.50!
