All the Christmas Feels Downtown: Giving back!

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

Every year around holiday season, we take time to reflect on our good fortunes, hopes and dreams and ultimately, what we can do better. We look to sneak in that last good deed before the end of the year. Just in time for #GivingTuesday, we have a couple of campaigns happening downtown, allowing you to give without having to leave downtown.

For children and families

CTV’s Toy Mountain Campaign

The 2017 CTV Toy Mountain Campaign in support of the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter (CWES) runs from Monday, November 20 to Friday, December 22, 2021. In support of this campaign you are invited to drop off toys in the toy box in one of following downtown locations:

  • Bankers Hall - Volunteers from the CWES will be located on Level 2 North of Bankers Hall Retail from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm weekdays collecting unwrapped toys and donations for their clients and families who have been impacted by domestic abuse.
  • Brookfield Place - Donate a new unwrapped toy to the Toy Box and visit representatives from the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter throughout the campaign at their awareness booth located on the Plus 15 Level (by the escalators) between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
  • Fifth Avenue Place - Donate a new unwrapped toy to the Toy Box and visit representatives from the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter throughout the campaign at their awareness booth located on the Plus 15 Level (by the escalators) between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
  • Suncor Energy Centre (Main floor) - Volunteers from the CWES will be on-site from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on November 20, 22-24, and November 27 to December 1 on the Main Floor, Under the Suspended Plane. Donations will be accepted in the form of cash, cheque or gift cards for the during of the campaign at the Suncor Energy Centre.

19th Annual Toy Angels Campaign

Take your holiday giving to new heights with Toy Angels 2017 – helping The Salvation Army making the season merry and bright for children!

During last year’s campaign, 36,000 toys and $6,600 in gift cards were collected. This year we hope to break this record as demand continues to increase. Downtown Calgary will be hosting KISS 95.9 live on location at Skate with Santa on December 9th at Olympic Plaza from 1pm-4pm collecting toys for the annual Toy Angels Campaign. Help lift the spirits of a child in need when you donate a new, unwrapped toy.

The Magic of Christmas

Calgary’s working force are invited to donate gifts from the comfort of their workspaces to The Magic of Christmas. Simply request one or more donation boxes anytime between November and Christmas Eve. Besides knowing that your gifts will go toward a family in need, this can make for a fun and meaningful initiative for you and your colleagues. Please call Santa’s workshop at 403-803-1619 to request a donation box.

What to donate

Want to donate gifts, but unsure of where to start? The Magic of Christmas visits Calgarians of all ages, from newborns to grandparents. If you need inspiration, please check out or print their Christmas Wish List for ideas. Please note that all gift donations that arrive at Santa’s workshop must be new, unused and unwrapped.

Where to donate

Food donations

Calgary’s Gingerbread House

More than 150 kilograms of flour, 165 kg of icing sugar, 16 litres of egg whites, 10 pounds of candy, two pounds of spices and sprinkle in some love equals the recipe Fairmont Palliser executive chef Eraj Jayawickreme used to create a life-sized gingerbread house in downtown Calgary (CBC News Calgary, November 27, 2021) . Come down to the Fairmont Palliser and step inside a magical gingerbread house with real icing and other sweet treats. Donations accepted for the Calgary Food Bank and the Calgary Drop-In Centre.

Calgary Food Bank Mayor’s Food Drive

On November 17, Mayor Naheed Nenshi and representatives from businesses, community, school systems, and media will come together in a friendly competition for the kick-off to the Mayor’s 29th Annual Christmas Food Drive. Although the event is fun-filled, the reason for coming together is still top-of-mind.

For the month of December, the Mayor’s 29th Annual Christmas Food Drive will collect important food and funds for families and individuals in need during the holidays and into the New Year. In 2016, the campaign raised more than $685,000 in food and funds. Donate online or visit the Central Library (616 Macleod Trail S.E.) to drop off a food donation.

Yummy Donations

Good Earth Coffeehouse Gingerbread Family

One Family helps another.

The holiday season is about giving back, and with your help, we want to help families in need. For every Gingerbread Family sold, we will donate $1.00 to our local Food Banks. Last year we sold more than 9,500 families. This year we’ve set a goal of selling over 10,000!

Our Gingerbread Family makes a perfect office, host or last-minute gift. They are available for purchase at all Good Earth Coffeehouse locations or you can add them to your Catering Order and have them delivered. Gingerbread Families are sold in packages of three cookies for $7.25 and are available from now until December 31st (or while quantities last).

To help spread the word and kick off our annual Gingerbread Family program, we encourage you to share the image above, or one of your own featuring the Gingerbread Family, on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and use the hashtag #FeedaFamily. For each social media post, we will donate $1.00 to our local Food Bank up to $2,500. This amount will bring our goal to over $12,500 for our local Food Banks. Let’s spread some Gingerbread cheer and raise awareness for the Gingerbread Family program and the real need that our local food banks address.

Inn from the Cold & Sunterra Markets

Thank Our Lucky Stars is back! Last year we raised $53,655, help us raise even more this year!

Starting December 1, purchase our seasonal star cookies for $5 and we’ll donate $2.50 from each pack towards supporting children and families involved with our community partners Inn from the Cold in Calgary and Ronald McDonald House in Edmonton. These delicious sugar cookies drizzled with white chocolate make a great gift for family, friends and clients. The cookies will be available at all market locations in Calgary and Edmonton and in our online market, so pick some up every time you shop!

Help spread the word using #luckystarscookie.
