St. Patrick’s Day in Calgary 2013

by Shannon Calhoun · 0 comments

St. Patrick’s day is a time of national celebration for the Irish, kind of like a second Christmas, and a time to remember their Patron Saint.

James Joyce Irish Pub -

Whether you’re from the land of leprechauns or not, if you’re looking for a place to celebrate with an Irish party you’re in luck! There are a number of pubs downtown hosting them between now and Sunday, March 17th.

James joyce

For something authentic, the James Joyce is probably your best bet.  This pub,  located in the old Molson’s (TD) Bank building on Stephen Avenue, is Irish owned and operated by the Currans.  Enjoy hearty Irish food and drink, and music by Fraid Knot.

Doors open at 10:00AM, only $10 cover.  VIP Tickets are $30.00+GST and include a VIP entry line, breakfast, party favours (while supplies last), and you’re able to come and go as you please (according to AGLC and fire regulations).   For more information call (403) 262-0708.

Why drink green when you can drink craft? You won’t have to at The Libertine where they always have 18 rotating taps of North American craft beer. Specials include a week long St. Paddy’s themed menu (Monday thru Saturday), Saturday: Mini Guinness shots $4.50 and 2 oz Shamrock Shakes $9.

8th Ave Ceili's Irish Pub and Restaurant

Paint the town green at Ceili’s with live music, Irish dancers and bag pipers.  This modern Irish pub has two locations downtown - one on 4th Ave and one on 8th Ave.

The Palomino

Want to avoid green beer and “Celtic” bands? The Palomino has your party! Doors at 1:00PM, no cover upstairs. Live music by Shillelaghs, Whiskey Post, Ivory Smoke, and Goodtime Specials.

fionn maccools

Head over to Fionn MacCool’s at Sheraton Suites Calgary Eau Claire where they’ve recently added 19 new beers and 19 new items to their menu, “bringing you an Irish Menu so fresh, so delicious, so…Irish, you won’t believe it was made in Canada!”

The new Rover Bites sound pretty amazing - crispy rounds of buttermilk mashed spuds, jalapeños, red peppers, green onions and Cheddar cheese, served with made-in-pub red pepper jelly.  Sold!

belowdeck st patrick - table

The party at Below Deck Tavern should be a good one, as they are also celebrating their 2nd anniversary. Congrats!

Open on both Saturday and Sunday from noon-2:00AM. Green hats and green beer, plus “Foggy Hour” prices all weekend. Live music on Saturday night with “Seven Shots from Sober” starting at 9:00PM, no cover charge.

The Belfry will have St. Paddy’s Day celebrations on Friday and Saturday for those who are looking to celebrate a little bit early.  Plus, a special Paddy’s Day menu.

The Met

The Met at TD Square kicked off their countdown to St. Patty’s Day on March 11th with 7 Days of Fortune!  Prizes include Irish Stew, Mini Yorkshires, Lamb Burger, or a pint of Guinness (prepaid).

Enjoy a week long St. Paddy’s themed menu (Monday thru Sunday) at The UnicornGreen beer and green hats all weekend.  Friday: Happy hour, no cover.  Saturday: Live music: Hurricane Felix and the Southern Twisters featuring Irish Dancers $10.00 cover.  Sunday: Food and drink features, no cover.

Whatever your celebration entails, be sure to wear green and enjoy your shenanigans responsibly!
