High Performance Rodeo 2016 & More Downtown Events

by Downtown Calgary · 0 comments

Each year the High Performance Rodeo fills an important niche in Downtown Calgary’s art scene and 2016 is no exception.

For the uninitiated; the High Performance Rodeo is a month long festival of boundary-pushing theatre, music, dance, comedy and performance art. Now in it’s 30th year, the festival is internationally renowned for the fun, exciting and unexpected types of theatre they bring to Calgary.

The largest of it’s kind Western Canada, the High Performance Rodeo is an excellent opportunity to experience something unique. No two years are the same, and the month-long festival has a number of shows that run at a variety of downtown venues.

Be sure to get your tickets soon, many shows sell-out! That being said, there are a few free events that are open to the public including Improv Everywhere’s MP3 Experiment happening at Bankers Hall on Friday, January 15th. This is a unique event that you can participate in, don’t miss it!

Calgary Songs Project - Until Jan 31

Keep your ears peeled for a hand picked selection of songs from the past 30 years of Calgary’s musical heritage. As a part of the 30th annual High Performance Rodeo, curators Kenna Burima and Arif Ansari have put together an eclectic playlist that will be playing in the Trees sculptures on Stephen Avenue.

To add to the fun, the songs have been arranged for the carillon and will be played noon hours all month from the Calgary Tower Carillon. This project kicks off the High Performance Rodeo and begins the officially proclaimed ‘Year of Music’ for 2016.

Calgary, I love you… - Jan 12 - 23

Who are we as a city? If an animal, what kind? If a gender, what variety? Are we a griffin or a gopher? A sphinx or a spaniel? A warrior-queen or a tipsy teen? Does the city have a soul and if so how do we describe it? Just who the hell are we now?

One Yellow Rabbit dowses, parses, and probes these questions for the 2016 High Performance Rodeo. Calgary, I Love You, but You’re Killing Me is about music, comedy and the mysterious relationship we all have with home.
