A Room with a Royal View and History to Match Could be Yours!

The Fairmont Palliser has stood proudly in the Calgary skyline and downtown community for 102 years and counting.  Passing this noble building every day on my way to work has often lead me to daydreams wondering about the amazing luxury and history that lay between its walls, so luckily, when one of my oldest, dearest friends came to visit, we had the opportunity to stay in the Royal Suite and find out.

This was a first time stay for both of us and it exceeded all expectations. No detail seems too small at the Palliser, as they thrive to make your stay unique and unforgettable. A fact evidenced by their staff recently receiving not one, but two White Hat Awards.

After a seamless check in at the Gold Floor concierge on the Penthouse level, we arrived into the most elegant room.  The high ceilings and palatial 800 square foot suite - complete with chandeliers - truly made us feel like royalty as we entered. The suite includes a spacious living room, formal dining room, kitchen, bedroom with a king-size bed and ensuite, plus another washroom off the living room. Not to mention a view of the city.

Upon arrival, a beautiful chocolate masterpiece by pastry chef Glen Chang and team, as well as champagne and a small cheese plate were waiting for us. Their in-room dining department and very own pastry shop know just the right touch to make your arrival standout! Adding some special details to make it a visit to remember is definitely worth considering.

The living room was the perfect spot for two old friends to drink bubbles and catch up before heading to The Oak Room for cocktails and appies. This would be such a wonderful space to host a wedding or baby shower…it would also be lovely for a romantic anniversary getaway (Hint, hint babe!).

In years past, the lavish suite housed a very special guest, Queen Elizabeth II, during a trip to Calgary in the ‘90’s, and there was something strangely magical about knowing this.  Throughout the room are many fantastic photos of royal stays from years gone by - the Palliser has a rich royal history, which you can view an interesting timeline of here.

Because it is located on the Fairmont Gold floor, guests in this room can enjoy Fairmont Gold services and privileges, including complimentary hors d’oeuvres from 5-7pm, as well as a delicious “continental” breakfast, which included espresso drinks, bacon, eggs, waffles, fresh juices, and more. All of this is served on the Penthouse level in a gorgeous room with an amazing view of the city.

If you’d like to experience the Royal Suite for yourself, they have an amazing opportunity for you to win your way there.  If you attend their special Queen’s Afternoon Tea, in honour of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday, the Royal Family will also be there – well, a fantastic cardboard version – and you’re invited to take a selfie with them to share on social media with #PalliserRoyalTea for a chance to win a night’s stay in the Palliser’s Royal Suite!

The Queen-inspired Afternoon Tea runs until June 13th. If you’re looking for a lovely way to spend some time with dear friends or family, this is such a refreshing change from your average brunch. Tea can be taken in the Oak Room or Lobby Lounge and there are several special surprises with the enhanced “RoyalTea.”

The menu includes their famous Fairmont teas, a selection of tea sandwiches, traditional house-made English scones with jam and Devonshire clotted cream and an enhanced variety of dainty pastries.  We were lucky enough to sample some of these at our last Downtown Libations event, and they were delectable! Seating times are available daily between 1-3pm. Reservations are required.

Fairmont Palliser is located at 133 9th Ave SW. You can sign up for their newsletter to get exclusive information about local events and promotions here.
