#IAMDOWNTOWN: Long Weekend in the City

by Kait Kucy · 0 comments

Sticking around town for the August long weekend? Looking for something to put the vacation in staycation? We’ve got some great tips for you to make the most of this hot hot weekend with some awesome arts and culture events. Stop by some food trucks and pick up a quick lunch for picnicking in the park and adventuring all over downtown.

August 1 @ 7pm

You won’t want to miss the artist talk by Toronto-based artist Alex McLeod at the Art Gallery of Calgary. He constructs “hyperrealistic 3D environments filled with crystalline mountains, fiery lakes, and rotund clouds, all rendered in a sickly sweet and gooey candy-colored palette”.

August 1 + 3 @ 8pm

Sit back and relax in the company of friends while you watch a great movie under the stars in the East Village for their Open Air Cinema Series. With showings all month long you can hit up a double-feature this long weekend with a screening on both Thursday and Saturday. Thursday features Jack Black’s classic School of Rock while Saturday’s screening features Must Love Dogs. Both start at 8pm. Bring your lawn chair, a blanket and some movie snacks!

August 3 @ 11am - 6pm

Live music lovers will want to head down to the Downtown Calgary Stephen Avenue stage for some awesome live music. Each Saturday for the entire summer, you can expect some incredible local acts as well some national touring acts. Amazing! Bring a picnic and your best friend for the best day in the sun.

August 5 @ All Day

Glenbow Museum is offering FREE admission for all this coming Heritage Day (Monday, August 5, 9am – 5pm). It is a great time to finally get into the museum to check out the M.C. Escher exhibit or the Made in the 1970s show. Perfect for families, you can spend the whole day exploring the museum!

Until August 5 @ Various Times

Checkout Historic Calgary Week for walking tours of various parts of Calgary.  The holiday is called ‘Heritage Day’ after all.
