Street Style Huntress: Fashion Flair

by Aldona Barutowicz · 0 comments

If it were up to me, we would all have our own personal stylist. Even as a stylist myself, I think it’s super cool to have someone else’s perspective and guidance - don’t we all end up purchasing clothing and pieces that are sometimes exactly alike? I mean, I must not be the only one that has too many of the same black top?

I especially enjoy conversing style with someone who is truly living her dream, as a stylist, teacher and mentour. She’s funky, extremely well versed in style and her passion is certainly key - it radiates, and you can’t help but want to know this stylish person - and I’m so lucky to be able to say that I do.

BR Pirri and her style advice are incredible, especially the part about getting caught up in too many rules - so wear what you love, and let people like her assist you in capturing and showcasing who you are through your style choices, no matter how much fashion knowledge, experience and flair you already have.

How would you describe your personal style?

Living in Calgary, the weather often dictates what to wear, but I try not to bow down to it!!  For the most part, I think my personal style is fairly classic with a side of funk! I like basics like jeans, blazers and black and white, but I’m also a bit of a trend lover too… not gonna pass up some faux fur or an over the knee boot!

What are some of your influences when it comes to fashion?

I’m a bit old school when it comes to influences and tend to find that a good fashion magazine and movies really inspire me in what I like to create in my own wardrobe day to day. I go to both for inspiration all the time!

What are some of your favourite stores and shopping destinations in Downtown Calgary?

I’m a huge fan of The Core, it’s such a different experience from other shopping areas. And I’m a sucker for valet parking so downtown is always easy for me, as I don’t have to spend my shopping time looking for parking. I’m super excited about Simons opening too!

What are some of your favourite Downtown YYC spots?

I’m a downtown gal, always have been! Every city I visit, I like to go downtown  as it always seems to have the most current hot spots! I love all things Stephen Ave, it’s such a fun place to go, there are so many things to do and see especially with the kids on the weekends.   Arts Commons has a special place in my heart as my husband and I got married in the Engineered Air Theatre 19 years ago!  Olympic Plaza and the gorgeous architecture that surrounds that building were the backdrop for our wedding pictures and I still love them all, to this day!

What are some of your favourite trends right now?

Oh man, my fave trend is still the distressed denim! I’m so in love with it, especially the raw hems and that unfinished look. I’m also diggin’ the crop flare and the culottes, it gives you such a different silhouette than our go- to skinny’s. Can’t forget that rounded toe and square heeled ankle bootie! Such a fresh take on the bootie of past seasons!

What fashion advice would you give to others?

My advice is simple: Buy the best you can afford; buy less of it; and wear it all the time. Really, wear the sh!t out of it…. money well spent! And…stop paying so much attention to rules, have fun with your clothing!

Tell us more about the projects and work that you’re involved with.

Everything I’m working on is so exciting! I’ve been the Stylist for Southcentre Mall for the past 4 years, as part of their free Concierge program, and I love helping men and women shop smarter and get their groove back!!! I also present at a monthly Style Academy held in the mall, where we discuss a different style dilemma, new trend or challenge each month, so tons of fun!  I’m also an Instructor at The Fashion Institute by Olds College and am thrilled and honestly honoured, as an industry professional, to pass on my knowledge and experience to these amazing post secondary students. I usually don’t say this out loud, but I enjoy it all so much I rarely feel like I’m working!!

What are some of your future aspirations?

Well, I’d really like to keep on keepin’ on with what I’ve been doing to be honest…..it’s the perfect balance for me 🙂 I teach people everyday, and that’s my love, whether it’s in the classroom or in the mall. I feel blessed to be living my passion!

How does your work influence your personal style?

I’m constantly seeing the latest and greatest as I’m always shopping, whether it’s for a client, with a client or for myself, I’m influenced constantly by what’s out there! I also find that my students keep me fresh and on top of things and certainly keep me ever evolving.

Anything you’d like to add or tell us about?

I’d just like men and women to give themselves permission to rock their style every single day. We get so caught up in rules that we forget to wear what we love and what makes us feel killer!!!  That exudes confidence, and confidence is sexy.
