10 Quirky Facts: The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Season

by CalgaryPhilharmonicOrchestra · 0 comments

With talent based from Calgary, and music from Pink Floyd to Bach, there’s something for everyone in our 2014/2015 Season. Get a sneak peek with these 10 fun facts:

  1. Mount Royal Conservatory talent! We’re featuring artists with a connection to the Mount Royal Conservatory, including alumni Jan Lisiecki (piano) and Nikki Chooi (violin) and faculty members Krzysztof Jablonski (piano) and Neil Cockburn (organ).
  2.  Over 76.5 million views! YouTube star Valentina Lisitsa, a pianist, is the most watched classical musicians on the internet. She performs with the CPO on June 5 and 6.
  3.  Custom art commission! In our concert on November 29, part of the J’aime Paris Festival, the CPO performs the Alberta premiere of Messiaen’s Turangalîla. The performance of Turangalîla will be accompanied by a visual installation created by instructors at the Alberta College of Art and Design. This visual installation was inspired by the fact that Messiaen had Synesthesia - a neurological condition where some people can see color when they hear certain keys or notes in music.
  4.  Snickers! From Snickers Commercials to spots on Funny or Die, the king of smooth jazz and self-deprecating humor, Kenny G, performs with the Orchestra on September 17.
  5.  Disney! Music from Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 is coming to the CPO! Check out Disney’s Fantasia: Live in Concert on October 10 and 11 (with three showings) where the Orchestra performs the music live alongside the cartoons.
  6.  Sony Classical Artist! World renowned violinist Joshua Bell performs with the CPO on October 30. If you’re a fan of violin music, don’t miss this concert.
  7.  George Canyon! Love country music? George Canyon is coming on December 17 to perform some of his hits, and holiday favourites.
  8.  Check out our organ! The CPO’s concerts on November 20 and November 21 will feature the Carthy Organ. It has 6040 pipes which laid end to end, total the same distance as the breadth of the English Channel.
  9.  Shaken, not stirred! If you love Bond music, we have a cocktail party in support of the CPO on September 18, featuring Bond-esque cars, photographers, signature drinks, and the talents of Broadway stars Capathia Jenkins (Newsies) and Ron Bohmer (Phantom of the Opera). We also have two Bond film music concerts starring Capathia and Ron on September 19 and 20.
  10. Haute Couture! Need a fashion fix? We’re having a French fashion show fundraiser at the Devonian Gardens on November 7 at 7:30pm as part of our J’aime Paris Festival. VIP tickets are $250 (VIP entrance at 6:30pm, fashion show, after-party), and regular tickets are $175 (fashion show and after-party). Fashions you’ll see on the runway are exclusively from Holt Renfrew.

See you in the concert hall! Remember, we’re directly across from Olympic Plaza. Learn more about the new season by calling our Box Office team at 403.571.0849 or visiting our website, cpo-live.com.
